Numerous pharmacist jobs and positions in the Mid- Atlantic states currently are available and the numbers of open job and opportunities (both full-time and part-time) have been steadily on the rise so far in 2022. The Middle Atlantic states, or commonly shortened to the Mid-Atlantic states, is the region of the United States located along the East Coast between the Northeastern and Southeastern States. This region typically includes New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the District of Columbia (Washington DC). It’s important to note that some folks also include Connecticut in the Mid-Atlantic region, as the climate resembles that of the other Mid-Atlantic states more than it does the rest of the states in New England.
The majority of medical experts view the shortage of pharmacists as the most critical and immediate concern that our nation’s Healthcare System faces currently. Being the health care worker most accessible to the general public, the pharmacist usually acts as the first “touchpoint” for a patient trying to engage with the US healthcare system. In fact, over ninety percent of all Americans reportedly live within five miles of a retail community pharmacy. Especially true in many rural areas of the Middle Atlantic States, the current shortage of pharmacists, including such large metropolitan cites such as NYC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Newark and Virginia Beach, has had a noticeably negative effect on the quality of healthcare that the region’s citizens and residents currently receive. The staffing shortage has led to reduced operating hours for many community drugstores and retail chain pharmacies, longer prescription dispensing waiting times, decreased customer satisfaction with the pharmacy’s operation, plus the turning away of some patients who were seeking to get COVID vaccinations.

Many people include the State of Connecticut as a part of the Mid-Atlantic region, as its climate is closer to that of the other Mid-Atlantic states than to the rest of the other states in New England.
From The Big Apple to The City of Brotherly Love, an estimated 60 million (58,095,788) people reside in the US Middle Atlantic Region. With nearly 330 million residents living in the entire USA, that equals roughly one-fifth (or a little under 20%) of our nation living in the American Mid-Atlantic states. This area includes New York City (NYC), affectionately known as The Big Apple or The City That Never Sleeps, to distinguish it from the State of New York, the most populous city in the United States. With a 2020 population of 8,804,190, New York City is also the most densely populated major city in the nation. Philadelphia, or The City of Brotherly Love, also helps comprise this region, coming in as the sixth largest city in the US with a population of almost 1.7 million residents, as does our Nations’ Capital – Washington DC.
Several other major metropolitan areas located in the US Middle Atlantic region include:
– Baltimore, MD
– Newark, NJ
– Richmond, VA
– Buffalo, NY
– Norfolk, VA
– Albany, NY
– Pittsburgh, PA
Many view the Mid-Atlantic as a relatively affluent region of the nation, having 43 of the 100 highest-income counties in the nation, based on median household income, and 33 of the top 100, based on per capita income. Most of the Mid-Atlantic states rank among the 15 highest-income states in the nation, by median household income and per capita income.

There are no “official and up-to-date” estimates that could be found for the total number of open positions available today for pharmacists in the US Middle Atlantic region. These open pharmacist job positions are in all types of pharmacy settings, including community pharmacies, chain store and grocery chain pharmacies, as well as institutions, clinics, hospital pharmacies and specialty pharmacies (such as compounding pharmacies, IV infusion pharmacies and mail-order pharmacy operations).
What’s also interesting to note from performing several Indeed searches, is that there are also 12,887 currently available openings for Pharmacy Technicians in the Mid-Atlantic USA. Along with the rest of the country, the Middle Atlantic has been hit hard by the pharmacy staffing shortage in the arena of Pharmacy Techs. What the National Community Pharmacists Association’s (NCPA) 2021 economic health report revealed was that a staggering 88% of the community pharmacies reported that pharmacy technicians are the most difficult pharmacy job position to currently fill. Many workforce experts agree that pharmacy technicians were perhaps among the jobs most affected by the COVID pandemic regarding the area of “employee burnout” and many simply left the workforce feeling underpaid, overworked and stressed out to go work in different job fields.
