Pharmacist Salary and Wage Review
Here at HCC we see both sides of the common wage and salary issues facing the pharmacy profession today. As in any other profession and vocation, an individual wants to be paid as much as possible for what they do, yet employers need to control salaries and costs in an attempt to maximize return on investment and profits. We sometimes find that attempting to put an hourly wage number on "what a Pharmacist's hourly worth is" is as complicated as the chemistry classes we all had to take and study so hard to pass in school. In studying the wage releases from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2019, we once again find as expected that variables such as geography, population density, type of pharmacy job, years of experience, etc. make the task of salary comparison an almost impossible job to complete.
What Does the 2019 Bureau of Labor Statistics Reveal About Pharmacist's Wage & Salary?
There are some interesting numbers that do stand out when reviewing the US Labor Bureau 2019 statistics regarding pharmacist jobs (although as stated above, please note that the relevancy of such statistics is perhaps, at times, questionable). The employment demand and need for pharmacists is, perhaps, no longer on the rise. Last year saw an increase of a little under 1% in the number of jobs available and pharmacists employed nationwide. The Labor Bureau still rated pharmacy as one of the top jobs to work in, however in the 2019 report they projected that this rise in pharmacist jobs and pharmacist demand will not continue to rise over the next several years. The median hourly wage for a pharmacist across the nation rose marginally to around $61.57 per hour (the wage at which half of the employed pharmacists earned more than that amount and half earned less). This was an increase of a mere 0.2% and it must be noted that the hourly wage ranged anywhere from just under $41/hour to just over $78/hour depending, as noted above, on too many variables to draw conclusions about. One other statistic that proved interesting enough to note was that women now comprise over 60% of all practicing pharmacists in the United States. Interestingly, it was also noted that while accounting for over half of the pharmacist workforce, women still face the challenge that male pharmacists "hold a disproportionate number of senior leadership levels" in our profession. We think that everyone would agree on the importance of salary in determining where an individual chooses to work and what competency level an employer can expect. Yet studies prove that salary is not always the number one determining factor in the decision of where a pharmacist chooses to work. If you are a pharmacist choosing where to find employment and what you should be paid, HCC can help you. If you are an employer looking for the right candidate and trying to determine what salary to offer, once again HCC can help.
