Retail Pharmacy Staffing Agency or Firm Florida and Texas
Retail pharmacist and technician staffing shortages across the US have forced some of the nation's largest retail pharmacy chains to take some drastic actions recently. CVS is in the process of closing down nine-hundred (900) of it's stores as promised back in 2019, and started with forty-six "underperforming" stores in Texas and Florida. These included pharmacies in Florida cities such as Ocala, Daytona Beach, Ft. Myers and West Palm Beach, plus Texas cities including San Antonio, El Paso, Brownsville, Katy, and Rio Grande City.
Walgreens To Use Robots To Fill Prescriptions Amid Staffing Shortage
This week the chain pharmacy giant Walgreens announced that in it's efforts to meet the current national pharmacist and pharmacy technician staffing shortages, it will invest in "robots" to fill prescriptions to free up pharmacists. The pharmacy chain giant currently operates over nine-thousand retail locations (9,021 stores) throughout the USA, with a "whopping" eight-hundred and twenty (820) stores in Florida and seven-hundred and one (701) locations in Texas. That equates to almost seventeen percent (17%) of all Walgreens stores being located in Texas and Florida! Even the most populous states such as California and New York lag behind, with 586 and 564 stores each.Already faced with staffing shortages that has lead to a third of their stores cutting pharmacy hours, Walgreens stated that by investing in an automated prescription filling process they would sharply reduce pharmacists’ and technicians' workloads by an estimated twenty-five percent (25%), plus cut their operating costs by over one billion dollars annually. The ultimate goal of the nation's second largest pharmacy chain is to give pharmacists the time required to provide medical services such as vaccinations, patient outreach and prescribing of some medications. Those have become growing revenue streams for pharmacies, who are now able to bill insurance carriers for certain clinical services. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and pharmacies expanded into both performing Covid testing and giving vaccinations, it resulted in putting increased pressure on already overworked pharmacists and technicians, resulting in a staffing shortage that many drug chains have struggled to fill.
How Does an Independent Retail Pharmacy Deal With the Staffing Shortages?
Most independent retail pharmacies are not in the position that Walgreens is in when it comes to dealing with the current and ongoing staffing shortages. In 2021 Walgreens had net earnings of nearly two & a half billion dollars, plus a gross profit of well over $28 billion, so automation costs can be "absorbed" across nearly 9,000 stores. That math obviously doesn't work for the average independent retail pharmacy, whose owners may own a single pharmacy or, perhaps, several dozen stores. The answer is to ally with a Pharmacy Staffing Agency such as Healthcare Consultants Pharmacy Staffing!
