State-Specific Requirements for Credentialing Your Pharmacy in the Northeast

In our previous post, we discussed the foundational steps for credentialing a new pharmacy in the Northeast. Now, we'll dig deeper into state-specific requirements to further assist you in establishing your new pharmacy.

Step 1: Pharmacy and Pharmacist Licensure

Each state requires its own licensure for both the pharmacy and pharmacists. The state's Board of Pharmacy is responsible for issuing these licenses. In Dover, Delaware, this falls under the Delaware Board of Pharmacy, while in Burlington, Vermont, it's handled by the Vermont Board of Pharmacy.

Licensing involves proving your education and passing examinations, among other requirements. In Newark, New Jersey, for instance, you must pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multi-state Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE).

Step 2: Pharmacy Permit

Next, your pharmacy will need a pharmacy permit. The State Board of Pharmacy grants this once you've met specific criteria, which can vary by state. The Board of Pharmacy in Portland, Maine, may have different requirements from the Board of Pharmacy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Step 3: Controlled Substances Registration

To legally dispense controlled substances, pharmacies need to register with both the federal DEA and their state's regulatory agency. This involves a comprehensive application process with stringent requirements.

In each state, the specific agency may vary. For instance, in New York City, New York, you'd need to apply through the New York State Department of Health's Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement.

In our third and final post, we'll discuss insurance and accreditation needs and how to establish your pharmacy as a trusted healthcare provider in the Northeast.
